Clio and Captur,Sandero and Logan Renault’s 0.9 tCe smallest three-cylinder engines

Renault 0.9 tCe

One of the smallest three-cylinder engines on the market is also one of the most fun. Renault’s 0.9 tCe is surprisingly potent for its 899cc capacity, while CO2 emissions of just 99g/km in the Clio and Captur models also make it one of the most tax-friendly.
The engine is also found in the Dacia Sandero and Logan MCV ranges, meaning that modern fuel-efficient three-cylinder engines are more accessible than ever.

The new 1-liter 12-valve 3-cylinder SCe engine comes with innovations like the DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshaft, one operating the intake valves and the other one operating the exhaust valves), a first-of-its-kind technology among entry-level powerplants. The all-aluminum engine is 20 kg lighter than its predecessor. The 1.6-liter 16-valve 4-cylinder SCe engine comes with a dual overhead camshaft operating the intake valves, fuel injectors mounted on the cylinder head and other novelties that ensure a high level of efficiency and performance. It is also an all-aluminum engine and is 30 kg lighter than its forerunner.

With 12 world titles, Renault’s expertise as an engine manufacturer in Formula 1 is put to profit to ensure maximum performance in production powertrains. The Energy Smart Management (ESM) system and the variable displacement pump are both F1-inspired technologies that help improve fuel efficiency. Additionally, an electro hydraulic power steering equips all versions; in addition to improving fuel consumption, it boosts performance and represents an evolution in terms of comfort.

The 1.6 SCe engine also comes with the Stop&Start system that automatically shuts down and restarts the engine to reduce the amount of time the engine spends idling at traffic lights, for example. Mainstream in top-of-the-range models, it ensures up to 5% in fuel economy and is now available on the Sandero and Logan. Models equipped with the Easy’R automated manual transmission now come with the electronic stability program (ESP) and the hill start assist (HSA) to improve safety.

Compared with their predecessors, the all-new 1.0 and 1.6 engines deliver combined-cycle fuel savings of up to 19% and 21%, respectively, when equipping the Logan and Sandero. Hatchback and sedan versions paired with the new powerplants and a manual transmission scored an “A” at the Fuel Efficiency Labelling Program (PEBV), while the Duster and Duster Oroch equipped with the 1.6 SCe engine boast fuel savings of up to 18% and 16%, respectively.

ADVANCEMENTS IN FUEL-EFFICIENCY TECHNOLOGY

Renault’s engineers introduced new technologies aimed at enhancing fuel efficiency. The 1-liter SCe engine has diamond-like carbon (DLC) coated tappets, piston rings and variable valve trimming (VVT). Usually applied as coatings to other materials that could benefit from some of those properties, the DLC is a class of amorphous carbon material that displays some of the typical properties of diamond.

As to the 1.6-liter SCe engine, these elements are coated by Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) to reduce wear and friction, in addition to boosting fuel economy. Both the PVD and DLC are F1-inspired technologies applied to production models.

With the variable displacement pump (1.0 SCe), the displacement, or amount of fluid pumped per revolution of the pump's input shaft can be varied while the pump is running. Straight from the track to the road, it makes the engine more economical by absorbing less power.

Already seen on the 2-liter engine that equips the Duster Oroch, the new 1.0 and 1.6 SCe engines now come with the all-new Energy Smart Management (ESM) system that recovers braking and deceleration energy to optimize efficiency. Through a simple yet efficient operation, when the driver releases the accelerator pedal at deceleration, the engine keeps on running without using fuel, and the alternator automatically recovers energy to direct it to the battery, whose charge increases without using fuel. During acceleration, the alternator does not ‘steal’ engine power to send it to the battery, as it was charged during deceleration. Fuel efficiency is improved by up to 2% thanks to this system.

Another noteworthy evolution is the adoption of an electrically powered hydraulic steering. For the driver, this means more driving comfort and less maneuvering effort. The variable effort steering varies the amount of power steering assist based on electrical inputs to provide the driver with improved road feel at higher speeds, for more safety. It is electrically controlled independently and, as a result, the engine does not lose power while fuel economy is improved by 3%.

The 1.6-liter engine that equips the Sandero and Logan comes with the Stop&Start system that automatically shuts down and restarts the engine to reduce the amount of time the engine spends idling at traffic lights and congestions, thereby reducing fuel consumption by up to 5%. The driver can turn the system on / off by simply pressing the button placed on the left of the steering wheel.

Driving-related vehicle data is used to provide drivers with real-time eco-driving tips via the optional in-dash Media NAV 2.0 interface. The system provides Eco-Scoring evaluations and Eco-Coaching advice at the end of journeys to help drivers adjust the way they drive in order to reduce fuel consumption.

With the new 1.0 and 1.6 SCe engines, Sandero and Logan are among the most economical cars to run in their respective segments, according to the Fuel Efficiency Labelling Program (PEBV). On gas in the city, the 1-liter hatchback is the only model in its segment to exceed 14 km/l, while the 1-liter sedan stands out for its 13.8 km/l. Equipped with the 1.6-liter engine, the hatchback achieves outstanding 12.8 km/l, while the sedan boasts 13 km/l. When equipped with the 1.6-liter engine, Duster’s fuel economy jumps from 9.5 km/l to 11.3 km/l.

1.0 SCe: MAXIMUM DRIVING PLEASURE

Renault places a bet on high-end technologies to improve powertrain performance. The 1-liter SCe engine has first-in-segment DOHC. With a variable valve timing that electronically reads engine revs, the system adjusts camshaft position within a wider range. As a result, engine characteristics are changed to ensure a better performance at different speeds and reduce fuel consumption.

The 1-liter SCe engine delivers 90% of maximum torque (10.5 kgfm) at 2,000 rpm, thanks to the DOHC, a 15% improvement compared to its predecessor. In practice, this means more agility, safety and driving pleasure. When overtaking on motorways, the 1-liter SCe engine adds safety as pick-up is 6% faster (80 to 120 km/h in 14.1 sec.). Acceleration was also improved by 8%, with a 0-100 km/h in 13 secs on ethanol.

The 1-liter SCe engine now delivers more power, with 82 hp on ethanol and 79 hp on gas, up 2 hp compared to the 4-cylinder engine running both on gas or ethanol.

“The 1-liter SCe engine is currently among the best in its class in terms of technology. With F1-inspired solutions and Renault’s expertise in powertrain design and development, it ensures driving pleasure and performance paired with fuel economy”, says Márcio Melhorança, General Manager of Powertrain Engineering at Renault.

By offering more durability than the timing belt, the presence of a maintenance-free timing chain is an additional evolution that contributes to reducing running costs.

The 1-liter SCe powerplant is made at one of the Renault’s three plants located at the Ayrton Senna Complex, in São José dos Pinhais, State of Paraná. A completely new assembly line was introduced in the CMO (Curitiba Powertrains) to make the all-new engine.

6 SCe: ADDED PERFORMANCE

The 1.6-liter SCe engine stands out for its performance and driving pleasure. Equipped with the new powertrain, the Sandero and Logan deliver a maximum power of 118 hp running on ethanol, up 11.3% from the previous 106 hp. When running on gas, there was an increase of 17.3%, from 98 hp to 115 hp.

The dual overhead camshaft operating the intake valves improves torque since the lower revs while ensuring an increased driving pleasure. For example, the Sandero now boasts an outstanding performance by accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 10.3 secs (3.7 secs less compared to its forerunner). With 9.2 secs, picking up from 60 to 100 km/h is almost 4 secs faster.

When equipped with the all-new 1.6 SCe engine, the Duster and Duster Oroch deliver 118 hp on ethanol and 120 hp on gas. Maximum torque is of 16.2 kgfm on any fuel. Improvements in terms of power and torque result from new ECU calibration and adjustments to the exhaust manifold.

With the Easy’R automated manual transmission, Sandero and Logan now offer the electronic stability control (ESP) and hill start assist (HSA), which engages automatically when a gradient of 3% or more is detected. Both technologies provide added safety and driving pleasure.

Just like the 1-liter SCe engine, the all-new 1.6 SCe engine is equipped with a maintenance-free timing chain instead of a timing belt. An elastic serpentine belt drives multiple accessories without a tensioner, which ensures lower maintenance costs.

While Mitsubishi is committed to expanding their SUV and crossover range, the Japanese automaker is not turning its back on the Mirage. With Mitsubishi now under the Renault-Nissan Alliance, it has been reported that the next-generation Mirage will be based on a Renault product.
Mitsubishi’s corporate vice-president and product planning head Vincent Cobee told reporters that they are looking to use Renault (and Nissan) platforms for the small hatchback category. If so, the car the next-gen Mirage will be based on is the Renault Clio. The Clio is Renault's entry into the B-segment hatch class and, if Mitsubishi will use the platform, the Mirage hatch will move up one size class.
With Mitsubishi under their wing, the Renault-Nissan Alliance will go for a three-pronged approach for the B-segment. At the same time, Mitsubishi UK chief Lance Bradley has confirmed that the all-new Mirage can be specified as fully-electric vehicle with gas models to complement it. That said, the French hatchback is also likely to spawn a Nissan counterpart, possibly the next-generation Note.
As for engines, the report said that these too may also be shared with Renault and Nissan. One of the likely candidates is the Renault TCe 90, a turbocharged, three-cylinder motor with a displacement of 899cc. In the current Clio, it produces 90 PS and 135 Nm of torque. Another possible engine to be fitted to the future Mirage is a three-cylinder, 1.2-liter unit which both Renault and Nissan use for their small cars.

however, is going to be earlier than we expected. In a report by Headlightmag.com, their sources say that the new look Mirage hatchback will be launched at next month's Thailand International Motor Expo. They also reported that the Mirage, while still coming with the same 1.2-liter 3-cylinder MIVEC engine that makes 78 PS and 100 Nm of torque, will have enhancements to allow it to meet the new Eco Car Phase 2 program in Thailand.
The Eco Car Phase 2 program means it will have emissions to comply Euro-5 standards with carbon dioxide emissions that cannot exceed 100 grams per kilometer, and achieve a fuel economy of 23.25 kilometers per liter or better. The program also mandates that it should have anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), brake assist (BA), and stability program (ASC, ESC, ESP, et al) as standard features for safety.
Spy Shot: Is this the new look 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage? image
HLM reports that some variants of the Mirage as well as the Attrage (AKA: Mirage G4) will have features such as forward collision management and radar sensing mis-acceleration mitigation which help prevent or reduce impacts from incorrect pedal application.
Overall, this will be the third look for the Mitsubishi Mirage/Mirage G4 family. It is expected that both the hatch and sedan will make an appearance at the Thailand International Motor Expo.

THE SMARTEST RENAULT ENGINE EVER! MEET ENERGY TCE 90, RENAULT'S FIRST 3-CYLINDER ENGINE

2019 GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW: THE NEW TCE 100 ENGINE UNDERLINES THE VERSATILITY OF THE ALL-NEW CLIO

HR10-Nouvelle-Renault-Clio-5-RS-Line-2019
The All-new Clio is the top attraction at the Renault Group’s stand at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show. Its many new features include the brand-new TCe 100 engine, the fruit of synergies within the Alliance. The engine has more power but consumes less fuel and comes with a manual, X-TRONIC and even a hybrid petrol/LPG gearbox option. The 1.0 TCe engine is the essence of the Clio’s versatility.

Take a guess: Which 1.0L engine in the Renault range has 3 cylinders, a turbo engine, is the smaller version of the 1.3 TCe and has a Euro 6d-Temp rating? It’s the new TCe 100, introduced on the All-new Clio, of course!
Like the 1.3 TCe, part of the range since 2018, the TCe 100 is the fruit of the work and synergies within the Alliance. The TCe 100 features much of the technology used in the previous version, including a turbocharger with an electrically-operated discharge valve, an exhaust manifold partially integrated into the cylinder head, twin variable valve timing control and a special steel coating on the cylinders (bore spray coating).
The new-generation engine is 10hp (100hp against 90) and 20N.m greater (160N.m against 140) than the TCe 90 it replaces, and also reduces both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. With emissions from as low as 100g/km, the petrol version of All-new Clio TCe 100 is at the forefront of its category. The engine provides optimum driving pleasure thanks to increased torque that kicks in at low engine speeds for exhilarating acceleration.
In short, the TCe 100 is more powerful and a more economical engine, a winning formula for every customer.

if Daimler keeps on using Renault engines, sooner or later it's going to fail.

Dear Mercedes: Please Stop Using Renault Engines

Mercedes is the definition of "cool". It's as cool as Darth Vader riding a dinosaur which is riding a shark with rocket launches on its back and iPhones for teeth. They are so cool, people actually buy their bad cars knowing they're bad!
From the S-Class, the G-Class, the ML-Class and even going as low as the SLK, their cars are very impressive… but not if you go too low in the range. There, the dreaded Dacia engine now lives, firmly planted like a marketing tumor. What? Let me explain!

In 2011, they launched the B-Class, followed in quick succession by the A-Class and CLA, soon to be joined by the GLA. They were supposed to be revolutionary, based around a new modular platform that makes them sporty and alive, but somehow they also represent an involution for the brand.

A Mercedes mechanic once told me all their big engines are awesome, but the engineers don't know anything about making small ones. This appears to be painfully true. I still remember riding shotgun in the old SLK 200 "Kompressor", not being able to comprehend how bad the performance and fuel economy were as a balance.

The compact cars created by Mercedes, especially the A-Class, have landed smack bang in the middle of the hardest hitting market, where all the best champions are gathered and do battle. If you like, the European compact segment is like pro middle weight boxing, and the Golf 7 is the undisputed champion. It also has a lot of help from another boxer who trains in the same gym, the Audi A3.

Mercedes trains some of the best heavyweight champions, but for compacts it enlisted the help of Renault. The collaboration started when Daimler and Renault co-developed the Citan and Kangoo. That is also where it should have stopped!

Instead, they chose to use Renault's 110 hp 1.5-liter diesel engine in a number of application and will use another diesel, the 1.6 dCi on the next C-Class. This week, they did the unthinkable and dropped and even more basic engine. The A- and B-Class will be available with a 1.5-liter diesel making just 90 horsepower and 220 Nm (162 lb-ft) of torque. This takes both cars from 0 to 100 km/h in 14 seconds.

I wasn't going to say anything on the record about this, but forums are buzzing about this subject, calling these the first Mercedes cars with Dacia engines. This for something that costs from €25,882 in Germany. It's really bad marketing when the guy buying the cheapest A-Class, dreaming of an SLS for 1/7 the money, gets a Dacia Sandero for 3 times the money.

It's not just the idea that the 1.5-liter engine shared with Renault, it's the way Mercedes has thought this through. The automaker always has a defeatist attitude when it came to these small cars, saying that it's too expensive for them to develop platforms, while Audi and VW gang up with Skoda and SEAT joining in as well.

But looking purely at the facts, the A 180 petrol model has a turbo 1.6-liter producing 122 PS. Meanwhile, Audi has a 1.4-liter turbo with 122 PS since forever and the power is delivered lower down. And that's just the base model, the new EA888 engine is miles ahead of the competition. And just think how many Engine of the Year awards VaG has to its name in the sub-2-liter range.

So maybe Daimler needs to shape up, stop wasting money on stupid projects that stroke its ego, like powerful electric cars, and open a development center to make really good small engines.

If you like, Mercedes makes heavy hitters that forget to do their roadwork, forget to score points in a match and just go for the KO all the time. It's spectacular to watch, but you're always expecting them to fail. That's not how you describe champions. I don't want to sound like a pessimist, but if Daimler keeps on using Renault engines, sooner or later it's going to fail.➷X😠😠😠😠😠

last 2 vehicles have both been B class with diesel engines and automatic gearboxes. The first was a B 180CDI (A) Spt Line and the current one is a B 200 d AMG Line.

I must say I was rather disappointed with the performance of the previous one, a particular problem being the failure to change down when expected (sometimes leading to some rather 'hairy' situations when turning across oncoming traffic !). Although I had it tested at the dealership nothing could be resolved (they did confirm it was a Renault engine and felt that the adjustment of the automatic gearbox ratios was not particulalry successful !) and I was very happy to move on to the current vehicle.
